High-Risk Sedation Update Program – Houston
|
Course Summary: The continuing education program
is designed to meet educational requirements regarding the assessment,
selection and management of the high-risk patient as defined by the Texas
State Board of Dental Examiners. The
program will address specifically to the practitioner’s level of anesthesia
training and anesthesia permit level. This program meets the requirements set
forth by various state boards requiring 16 hours or less of training
regarding moderate or deep sedation for the adult and/ or adult high-risk
patient. The purpose of the program is to provide updates regarding
legal-state board requirements, medical principles of sedation and emergency
management. State board requirements will be addressed including current and
updated state regulations. Specific
rules will be addressed to each participant’s particular state. Requirements addressed will include office
protocols, anesthesia equipment and emergency equipment and medications.
Necessary documentation such as pre-anesthesia and post-anesthesia
instructions, pre-sedation checklists, consent requirements and anesthesia
procedure and recovery documentation will be discussed. Current consent issues and recommendations
will be discussed as published by the Texas Medical Disclosure Panel. Medical
principles of sedation will include patient assessment of adult high-risk
patients, obtaining necessary consultations, and risk assessment. How the necessary pre-assessment
information requirements ascertained is important in determining patient
selection. Pharmacology and administration/
dosing of various sedative and non-sedative medications and their use will be
discussed with patient examples. Patient management from the beginning of
sedation through dismissal will be presented. Emergency preparation and
management is extremely important in the safe management of a sedated
patient. Preparation including
required emergency practice sessions, medications and adjunctive equipment
will be discussed. Airway management
is extremely important so management during the procedure will be shown. An airway station to practice emergency
airway management is part of the program with positive pressure apparatus and
airway available. Additionally,
anesthesia-related and medical emergencies will be addressed and practiced
utilizing high-fidelity pediatric and adult manikins. Additionally,
anesthesia-related and medical emergency management scenarios will be
addressed and managed in groups utilizing life-like high fidelity pediatric
and adult manikins. The focus is to enhance the safety and success of
non-anesthesia and anesthesia treatment procedures at all levels in managing
the high-risk patient. American Society of Anesthesiology guidelines and/ or
statements regarding office-based anesthesia, moderate sedation practice
guidelines, pre-operative assessment, fasting parameters, assessment of the
sleep-apnea and the diabetic patient. Time will be available for an open
discussion of various cases and scenarios with the faculty and participants. The program “Management of the High Risk Patient” is designed to
satisfy TSBDE Rule 110.16. This hybrid
program consists of online preparation, class lecture and a hands-on
component. The hands-on component will
be conducted with a combination of video observation and hands-on practice
utilizing a high-fidelity manikin. The sedation and emergency protocols
are provided to help fulfill necessary requirements and to help facilitate
patient and emergency management. These
methodologies are generalized and it's the doctor’s responsibility to
individualize management. Care and research has been taken as much as
possible. But you must still evaluate
