Principles of Pain Management - Webcast**

Course Summary:  This continuing education program is designed to meet the mandatory CE requirements as required in TSBDE Rule 104.1.  There are two programs available to satisfy the biennial renewal requirement: The 2 (two) hour option fulfills the 1 (one) year requirement or program (from 5:30-7:30 pm), and the 4 (four) hour option fulfills the 2 (two) year requirement (from 5:30-9:30 pm). This webcast can be done as a combined program, with two hours to meet rule 104.1 and 2 hours to meet rule 111.1.

Course Fulfillment: This course is designed to satisfy Prescription Drug Requirement Education of various State Dental Board requirements for states requiring up to 4 hours of Pain Control, including principles of prescribing practices, Use and Abuse of Prescription and non-prescription medications (including street drugs of abuse). Course Objectives:

•Provide educational review for the practitioner based upon individual state board and DEA requirements

•Review safe and effective pain management of pediatric, teenagers and adult.

The Course Material will address:

•Utilization of the Prescription Monitoring Program and how to avoid (limit) fraudulent prescriptions

•Reasonable standards of care of patient management, pain management and drug prescribing

•DEA rules and Regulations

•Principles of non-opioid and opioid pain management

•Discussion of non-pharmacologic pain management techniques

•Communicating with patients and/ or guardian regarding non-opioid pain management

•Effectively communicating with patients regarding the prescription of an opioid or other controlled substance

•Provide guidance with patients regarding the proper disposal of unused controlled substance(s) including pain medications, sedative medications or others

•Discussion of properties of individual medications and utilization in particular populations

•The identification of drug-seeking behavior in patients

•Documentation of controlled substance ordering, prescribing, and/ or dispensing to meet DEA and State Board requirements

•Proper disposal of controlled substances- out of date, contaminated, wasting, etc.

•Guidance to develop an office drug policy

•Staff training regarding office policy
