Pediatric Sedation Management Program – McKinney

Course Summary: The continuing education program
is designed to meet educational requirements regarding the anesthesia
assessment, selection and management of the pediatric patient. The program will address specifically to
the practitioner’s level of anesthesia training and anesthesia permit level.
This program meets the requirements set forth by various state boards
requiring 16 hours or less of training regarding moderate or deep sedation
for pediatric patient. The purpose of the program is provide
updates regarding legal-state board requirements, medical principles of
sedation and emergency management. State board requirements will be addressed
including current and updated state regulations. Specific rules will be addressed to each
participant’s particular state.
Requirements addressed will include office protocols, anesthesia
equipment and emergency equipment and medications. Necessary documentation
such as pre-anesthesia and post-anesthesia instructions, pre-sedation
checklists, consent requirements and anesthesia procedure and recovery
documentation will be discussed.
Current consent issues and recommendations will be discussed as
published by the Texas Medical Disclosure Panel. Medical principles of
sedation will include patient assessment of the pediatric individual,
obtaining necessary consultations, and risk assessment. How the necessary pre-assessment
information requirements ascertained is important in determining patient
selection. Pharmacology and administration/ dosing of various sedative and
non-sedative medications and their use will be discussed with patient
examples. Patient management from the beginning of sedation through dismissal
will be presented. Emergency preparation and management is extremely
important in the safe management of a sedated patient. Preparation including required emergency
practice sessions, medications and adjunctive equipment will be discussed. Airway management is extremely important so
management during the procedure will be shown. An airway station to practice emergency
airway management is part of the program with positive pressure apparatus and
airway available. Additionally,
anesthesia-related situations and medical emergencies will be addressed and
practiced utilizing high-fidelity pediatric manikins and airway manikins. The
focus is to enhance the safety and success of non-anesthesia and anesthesia
treatment procedures at all levels in managing the pediatric patient.
American Society of Anesthesiology guidelines and/ or statements regarding
office-based anesthesia, moderate sedation practice guidelines, pre-operative
assessment, fasting parameters, and assessment of the pediatric patient in
the office setting. Time will be available for an open discussion of various
cases and scenarios with the faculty and participants. Note,
this is not an initial or certifying program.

The sedation and emergency protocols are provided to help fulfill necessary
requirements for emergency management.

designed to satisfy TSBDE Rule 110.17.
This hybrid program consists of online preparation, class lecture and
a hands-on component. The hands-on
component will be conducted with a combination of video observation and
hands-on practice utilizing a high-fidelity manikin. The didactic component will
consist of 16 hours and include: (A)pre-anesthetic patient
assessment/evaluation for pediatric patients;
(B)physical evaluation and medical history of pediatric patients,
including obesity, limited neck mobility, micro/retrognathia,
macroglossia, Mallampati
score, and limited oral opening;
(C)pediatric anatomical and physiological differences;
(D)pediatric respiratory assessment, including airway anatomy,
physiology, and management;
(E)informed consent by parent, guardian, or care-giver;
(F)sedation/anesthesia pharmacology;
(G)sedation/anesthesia management of pediatric patients;
(H)pediatric patient monitoring;
(I)peri-operative complications and
emergencies;
(J)emergency management of pediatric patients, including pediatric
anesthesia equipment and resuscitation supplies;
(K)sedation/anesthesia technique;
(L)sedation/anesthesia record keeping;
(M)patient recovery and discharge;
(N)pediatric case selection and reference behavior scale;
(O)American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric
Dentistry anesthesia guidelines The sedation and emergency protocols
are provided to help fulfill necessary requirements and to help facilitate
