Course Summary: The
continuing education program is designed to meet the mandatory CE
requirements as required by the 4 hour biennial requirement of the TSBDE
(rule 104.1 and rule 111.1) and other states with prescription drug and opioid
required training programs. The first purpose of the program is to provide
education in the Safe and Effective pain management with an emphasis
regarding non-opioid and non-prescription pain management for acute dental
pain. It will review the clinical
traits of non-opioid analgesics and alternatives as well as opioid
analgesics. Specific management
protocols will be provided and addressed. This will include the importance of
accessing the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program as part of the patient assessment
and management. The second purpose provides an update on scope of the
non-opioid and opioid drug epidemic while addressing current misuse and abuse
of non-prescription and prescription drugs.
One aspect is to address the current opioid epidemic with dental
patient concerns. This includes a
focus on the dentist’s part to alleviate or minimize potential diversion of
controlled substances. Additionally, a
review of some substance use disorders and the impact upon patient
management. Note:
The program will be presented as a live, interactive program with the
opportunity for discussion and ask questions.

Course Objectives: At the completion of this program, the participant will be
able to: •Understand the current nature and scope of the opioid
epidemic •Understand current state laws and the DEA educational
requirement •Review safe and effective pain management of pediatric,
teenagers and adult. •Utilize the Prescription Monitoring Program and how to
avoid (limit) fraudulent prescriptions •Understand reasonable standards of care of patient
management, pain management and drug prescribing •Understand the principles of non-opioid and opioid pain
management •Apply non-pharmacologic pain management techniques in
their dental practices •Communicate with patients and/or guardian regarding
non-opioid pain management •Utilize the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program to
address controlled substance prescriptions, Narx
scores, and multiple state links as a search tool •Understand current non-opioid medications (analgesic
and non-analgesic) utilized in pain management •Address alternative (non-medication) pain management
techniques •Discuss the utilization (prescribing) of opioids and
other controlled substances •Effectively communicate with patients and family
regarding pain management, type of pain expected and the purpose of each
medication and alternative techniques •Apply clinical techniques and principles of safe and
effective pain management •Apply principles and importance of ERAS •Discuss abuse and misuse of controlled substances •Address strategies to eliminate or minimize diversion
and abuse of controlled substances •Describe strategies to recognize substance use
disorders and addiction disorders and the importance of appropriate referral
to qualified healthcare personnel •Address a team approach to pain management strategies
and diversion issues regarding the patient with chronic pain, addiction and/
or substance use disorders •Provide guidance with patients regarding the proper
disposal of unused controlled substance(s) including pain medications,
sedative medications or others •Discuss properties of individual medications and
utilization in particular populations •Identify drug-seeking behavior in patients •Document controlled substance ordering, prescribing,
and/ or dispensing to meet DEA and State Board requirements •Properly dispose of controlled substances which are out
of date, contaminated, wasting, etc. •Establish procedural guidance and to develop an office
drug policy •Train staff members regarding a customized office policy |
