Course Summary:  Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is required for level 2 permit holders who sedate children, 12 years of age or under. This program follows the 2010 AHA Guidelines and is designed to prepare the healthcare provider to manage emergencies in the pediatric population. The dental office is a unique environment consequently this program addresses specific issues related to this, especially with the sedated patient. Contents include, but are not limited to, airway assessment and management, applied pharmacology, physical assessment, and management of various cardiac emergencies. This limited enrollment hands-on program allows the practitioner to become the leader in management of various emergencies.  In order to take the course, participants must be current in PALS and have a Level 2 permit.  You will need to complete an online component to meet the Level 2 criteria.  The lecture and online component will provide the necessary Level 2 CE hours.  PALS materials will be sent to prepare for the PALS component. This course is the American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider Course which requires a didactic and hands-on component. Additional in-class didactic information will address issues and circumstances which could be encountered in the dental office setting, outside the office (such as the parking lot) and in the practitioner’s social environment. A focus will be to help the practitioner avoid emergency situations, consequently, several areas will be elaborated beyond the AHA online component.  Medical principles will include patient assessment of the pediatric individual, obtaining necessary consultations, and risk assessment.  How the necessary pre-assessment information requirements ascertained is important in determining patient selection. The hands-on component will consist of practice and management of scenarios utilizing a high-fidelity manikin. This will meet or exceed the AHA requirements for in-class management. Emergency preparation and management is extremely important in the safe management of a non-sedated and sedated patient. In-office preparation including required emergency practice sessions, medications and adjunctive equipment will be discussed.  Airway management is extremely important so management during the procedure will be shown.  An airway station to practice emergency airway management is part of the program with positive pressure apparatus and advanced airway adjuncts available.  Particular scenarios are dictated by the American Heart Association.  Additionally, anesthesia-related situations and medical emergencies will be addressed and practiced utilizing high-fidelity pediatric manikins and airway manikins with practitioners working in small groups. American Heart Association guidelines will be followed for course completion.  An e-card will be issued from the American Heart Association upon successful completion of the AHA online part one program and the in-class management program. Time will be available for an open discussion of various cases and scenarios with the faculty and participants.
NOTE:  You must be current in PALS and you must complete an online component prior to the live program. 
The PALS course prerequisite consists of completing the AHA online component prior to the course.  Applicants will be given an access code, once they sign up for the program.  Registrations received less than one week prior to the program will not be accepted without the course director approval.

Note: Class size/ instructor ratio, course parameters and course material is guided by the American Heart Association. This course is the American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider Course which requires a didactic and hands-on component.  The AHA online part one is utilized for part of the didactic component in conjunction with the classroom hands-on component must be completed prior to being issued an e-card (the access code and instructions are provided as part of the course fee).

Educational Course Objectives:
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

•    Recognize and initiate early management of conditions that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome.

•    Recognize unconscious/ pulseless situation and provide proper management

•    Demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS care, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating AED use.

•    Manage cardiac arrest until return of spontaneous circulation, termination of resuscitation, or transfer of care.

•    Identify and treat ischemic chest pain and expedite the care of patients with acute coronary syndromes

•    Recognize other life-threatening clinical situations, such as stroke, and provide effective initial care and transfer to reduce disability and death.

•    Demonstrate effective communication as a member of a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance.

•    Explain why the foundation of successful resuscitations includes both mastery of basic skills and effective team dynamics

•    Describe the important elements of effective resuscitation team dynamics

•    Describe the clinical situations in which the following airway adjuncts may be used for airway management: oropharyngeal airway, nasopharyngeal airway, bag-mask ventilation, advanced airway

•    Recognize a patient who may be in Ventricular Fibrillation

•    Perform defibrillation with minimal interruption of chest compressions

•    Coordinate team functions while ensuring continuous high-quality CPR, defibrillation, and rhythm assessment

•    Assign team functions and monitor CPR

•    Discuss the circumstances when resuscitation should not be initiated

•    Recall that survival from asystole is poor and that asystole may represent an agonal end-stage rhythm

•    Recall the correct dosage and timing of administration for epinephrine in cardiac arrest

•    Assign team member roles and monitor performance

•    Discuss the differential diagnosis of life-threatening chest discomfort

•    Recognize symptomatic bradycardia and recall its signs, symptoms, causes, and treatment

•    Determine whether signs and symptoms are caused by bradycardia or by another condition

•    Recognize need for cardioversion

•    How to perform an initial patient assessment that can identify symptoms due to a stable tachycardia

•    How to identify sinus tachycardia and understand that treatment involves identification of an underlying cause
